About Lake Conroe
Lake Conroe is located on the west fork of the San Jacinto River and is one of the fastest growing areas in the nation. A man-made lake, Lake Conroe was built in 1973 as a joint project of the Texas Water Development Board, the San Jacinto River Authority, and the City of Houston, as an alternate water source for the City of Houston.
The lake covers over 22,000 acres and has over 157 miles of shoreline. The communities of around the Lake Conroe area include Conroe, Montgomery, and Willis and have a total population of about 103,600 people in these three towns. The lake is bordered on the north by Sam Houston National Forest, which has several species of birds, an abundance of wildlife such as deer, squirrels, and alligators. Lake Conroe has some of the best fishing around with a variety of popular species such as blue, channel and flathead catfish, as well as large-mouth bass and crappie.
There are plenty of activities and recreational facilities available in the National Forest such as tent camping, RV camping, hiking, horseback riding, and trails for ATVs, mountain, and dirt biking. There are recreational areas which provide boat launching as well.
Lake Conroe’s Economy
The area’s economy was once based upon the timber, farming, and oil industries. At one time Conroe was the third greatest oil center in the US. However, Conroe has carefully planned for and has seen growth and prosperity and its economy has since become much more diversified. Conroe has attracted manufacturing, biotechnology, health care, construction, retail, and tourism companies into the area.
One of the things that perhaps make this area more attractive for these industries is that Conroe is just 30 miles from Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston and is serviced by 21 passenger airlines with routes to a hundred US cities and 20 countries throughout the world.
